Why Isn't There A Fable 2 PC Version Released Yet?

A long time ago Fable 2 was released for the Xbox 360. Many fans have been wondering since that happened if there would ever be a Fable 2 PC version. Since Fable 3 is being released in 2011, many fans are left wondering if there is even a chance for a Fable 2 PC version.

Let's look quickly at the history of the game and series. When the original Fable game was released on a console platform, the initial launch became so successful that the developers of the game felt that they had to create a PC port of the game. Eventually, the first Fable game was expanded and released on the PC to similar success.

The game series eventually followed up with a sequel, Fable 2. And in October 2010, the third game, Fable 3, was released on the Xbox 360. During the release of the third game, the PC edition of Fable 3 was announced that it would be released on May 17th, 2011, approximately a half a year after the console version of that game.

To this day, Fable 2 still does not have a PC version. There has been a lot of speculation on why this has happened, but no one knows exactly for sure why. In 2009, a member from the Lionhead development team indicated that Lionhead was not working on a PC version of Fable 2. Despite this information leaking out to the gaming media, Lionhead did state as a company that their sequel was so successful that they would be forced to create a PC port of the sequel. That never happened though.

So where does this leave the game and the series? The original Fable has a console and PC version. The sequel of the game has a console version but not a PC edition. And the third game in the series has a console and PC version. Now the question is, if the developer has not created a PC version of the sequel by this point, will they ever? Does it even make sense for the company to go backwards in the series and work on a PC version of a game that has been out for years? Or, does the company continue to move forward and work on the fourth incarnation of the series?

If the developer never goes back and creates a PC port of the sequel, this wouldn't be the first series to abandon a particular gaming platform midway through the series. When the original Gears of War game was brought out onto the market, it was created for the console platform and eventually ported over to the PC. The game was extremely successful. The game's creator, Epic, confirmed that it would be working on a sequel to the game. However, there was one particular note that puzzled some fans. Epic stated that Gears of War 2 would only be available on the console platform. They further stated that they would not be working on a PC version of Gears of War 2, ever.

This has left many fans of the Fable series to conclude that if there hasn't been a Fable 2 PC game created by now then it probably won't happen. There have been several attempts by fans of the series to port the game over to PC themselves via an Xbox 360 emulator. These attempts have met with mixed levels of success. There still is not true Fable 2 PC version of the game.

In the end, one has to conclude that the company with continue on with the series and move forward to Fable 4. There is probably a much larger monetary incentive for them to do that then move backwards in the series. But fans can continue to hope and wonder if there will ever be a Fable 2 PC version released.
